- The Challenge runs from October 24th, 2011 to April 30th, 2012.
- Everyone should strive to read 25 books and complete 25 responses by the end of the challenge. All students who reach this goal will get a very special reward.
- You must read books from the list and must complete a response for each book read. You will need to keep a portfolio with the titles of books read, projects for each book, and a signature page (parents or teachers may sign that you completed each book and project).
- Each time a book and report are completed, please let your teacher know so that you can add a book to the Advanced Reading Challenge board. Each time 5 books are read and responses are completed, you will be entered to win a prize.
Creating a Reading Challenge Portfolio
-Recommended materials: 3 ring binder, clear pockets/protectors
-Alternate materials: folders, accordion folder, box
-Portfolios need to contain: book checklist, projects
-May also contain: copies of book covers, list of project ideas, book notes, book list

Media Center Policies and Procedures
Flexible Access
A flexible schedule allows maximum access to Library Media Center (LMC) resources. Students, individually or in small groups, may come to the LMC anytime during the school day as long as prior arrangements have been made. Teachers may schedule classes or groups of students in the LMC as needed. A weekly schedule is kept near the circulation desk for signup. Teachers must accompany students during whole-class visits and are responsible for their behavior.
Circulation
- Students and parents may check out any easy, fiction, nonfiction, or biography book. Staff members have access to the entire collection, including reference, professional, and audiovisual materials.
- Students in grades K-2 may check out 1 book at a time for 2 weeks.
- Students in grades 3-8 may check out 2 books at a time for 2 weeks.
- Reference books must be used in the LMC. Students are not allowed to them check out.
- Students who have overdue, damaged, or lost books cannot check out another book until their LMC record has been cleared. Students charged with lost or damaged books must pay full replacement value in order to clear their LMC record. Report cards will be held at the end of the year if books are not returned or paid for.
- Staff members may check out an unlimited number of materials. They may keep most materials as long as necessary for instructional purposes but are encouraged to get items back in a timely manner so that they will be available to others.
Services
- Story Time -- Story time is available weekly for grades K-2. Story time develops listening and literacy skills, as well as an appreciation for a variety of literature.
- Resource-based Instruction -- Resource-based instruction allows the teacher and media specialist to plan units together to enhance and reinforce instruction. It has a direct impact on the teaching/learning process as the teacher and media specialist utilize all the resources of the LMC, making the LMC an extension of the classroom.
- Curriculum Planning – Media specialist is available to meet with teachers during planning time to help identify and locate resources to meet curriculum needs.
